Charleston | The Art Scene
The more Charleston lures sophisticated newcomers to our luxury condos, the more our already fertile arts abound. Lots of crackerjack theatre troupes grace our venues in addition to the annual Spoleto Festival world class offerings.
Respectful traditional artists as well as strident contemporary masters can be found in the lively gallery scene on the peninsula. Photography is treated with due respect not only in the popular galleries but happily through great seminars and exhibitions at the College of Charleston's new Halsey Institute of Comtemporary Art and our old friend Jack Alterman Studios. Dance is alive and well, especially at the Charleston Ballet Theatre and their nationally renowned choreographer Jill Barr. Music. Ah music! Our own Charleston Symphony Orchestra and our resident Chamber Music Charleston thrive. Jazz is emanating from all corners downtown, and a plethora of contemporary pluckers, pickers, rap artists, and blues guys call Charleston home port. I'll step into lots of venues and keep you abreast of the brisk Charleston art scene.
