Renovation: Buying or selling, the quality shows

Charleston has history, a lot of history, especially in its buildings. Beautifully maintained properties are more likely to sell than their faded counterparts. But before you pick out a new colour scheme it's important to know if your home needs more than just a touch of paint. Buyers in the Historic Charleston market are looking for quality workmanship as well as a good price. Sellers of course want the best price for their Charleston property, so it's important to get it right.

When attracting buyers to your Historic charleston property the first thing people will look at is the outdoor facade. If the house looks run down you are going to struggle to attract the right kind of buyer. Unless you are hoping to sell your charleston property to a developer that is. Once inside it is important to have kitchen's and bathrooms that impress. These two areas are where people spend a great deal of time. Is the kitchen in your charleston home welcoming? Can you imagine spending a long time in the bathroom getting ready for a night on the charleston town eating shrimp?

Ready to Renovate - The Post and Courier

Home renovations are popular today as people remodel existing houses they plan to live in for some time or fix them up to prepare for sale. Renovations can be extensive, expensive, cosmetic or basic. Sometimes, they aren’t the main focus of a house for sale but are important nonetheless.

Home renovations can be tricky because the design crew is dealing with older surroundings, whether just a few years or a few centuries.

“You are working with a pre-existing condition,” Stein says. “Old plumbing, old electrical work, old air conditioning. I have to know how they built over the past 200 years.”

If you are considering renovating your charleston home it might be worth spending some time going round other historic charleston buildings. This will give you a feel for what has been accomplished and what can be accomplished with your historic charleston home.

Do you need to keep a formal lounge or dining room? Can they be removed to make way for a much bigger kitchen? Or can one or the other be turned into a study?  As more and more people work from home, having a dedicated office and study may be the biggest selling point for your historic charleston property.

Renovating your historic charleston home may cost a lot of money, but it can be re-couped and more if the renovations are suitably impressive.
